Venom Extraction

Venom is a natural resource with potential. The composition of animal venom is very complex, containing many proteins, peptides and other compounds. Some of these biologically active ingredients can be used as research tools in physiological and pharmacological research, and are important sources for the development of powerful new drugs. Therefore, there is a strong need to obtain venom from various poisonous animals for research purposes. So far, many methods of collecting venom from different species have been developed. Such as manual extraction, electrical stimulation and the use of special tools.

To obtain high-quality venom, the choice of extraction technique is very important. However, due to the danger of the venom extraction process and the complexity of the steps, for many researchers, there are certain operational difficulties in extracting the venom.

Creative Proteomics can provide the most suitable venom extraction method for animals of different species according to your requirements, making your research easier and safer.

Snake Venom Extraction

Snake venom is a liquid secreted from the venom glands of venomous snakes. The toxicity, pharmacology and toxicological effects of different snake venoms have their own characteristics. Snake venom has good medicinal value in Chinese medicine. Snake venom can be collected in two ways: "dead collection" and "live collection". "Dead collection" is a special destructive method of cutting off the venom glands from the head after the snake is put to death by anesthesia. This extraction method may lead to species extinction and is only used occasionally in special circumstances. In order to protect snake resources, the "live collection" method is generally used.

Snake Venom Extraction
  • Electrical stimulation extraction method
  • Stimulate the inner wall of the snake’s mouth with a weak electrical stimulation tool. When a snake is electrically stimulated, it will immediately secrete venom due to an electric shock. However, if the stimulation is too large, it will affect the health of the snake.

  • Bite membrane method
  • Use a glass funnel, fix a layer of film at the mouth of the funnel, and block the end of the funnel with a rubber stopper. Catch the snake's neck, make the snake bite the vessel, and the venom can flow out. For snakes that produce less and thick venom, connect a duct at the bottom of the funnel to extract air to create negative pressure for collection.

  • Extrusion method
  • Fix the snake’s neck and manually push from the back to the front to squeeze the venom glands on both sides. The venom will flow out of the snake’s mouth and squeeze it until the non-venom flows out.

Scorpion Venom Extraction

Scorpion venom has two major toxins, neurotoxin and cytotoxin. Scorpion venom has preventive and inhibitory effects on various diseases such as the nervous system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, cancer, skin diseases, and various viruses that are extremely harmful to humans.

Scorpion Venom Extraction
  • Manually collect venom
  • Manually stimulate the abdomen of the scorpion to release the venom. After collection, the venom was lyophilized and stored at -20°C until use.

  • Electric shock to collect venom
  • In order to obtain better conductivity, the body of the scorpion can be immersed in a saline solution. Use electrodes to give an electric shock until the scorpion shoots venom. The extract was lyophilized and then kept at -20°C until use.

The venom extraction service we provide covers many species, such as spiders, centipedes, toads, jellyfish and other common toxic creatures.
