A Venn Diagram (also called a logic diagram or set diagram) is a diagram that represents all possible logical relations between a collections of different groups. Typically overlapping shapes, usually circles, are used, and a scaled or area-proportional venn diagram is one in which the area of the shape is proportional to the number of elements it contains. These diagrams consider sets as regions inside curves, and elements as points in the plane. An element is in a set S just in case the matching point is in the region of S. Thus, this is a special case of Euler diagrams, which do not necessarily show all relationships. Venn diagrams became to widely usedaround1880. They are applied to study elementary set theory, as well as illustrate simple set relations in statistics, linguistics, logic, probability and computer science.
