Metabolomics is an important area of study in systems biology, following genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. It is currently a research hotspot in the field of histology. The concept of metabolomics was introduced by Nicholson's group in the UK when they analyzed the composition of rat urine from a toxicology perspective. Metabolomics is a technique used to study the metabolic pathways of biological systems by examining changes in metabolites after a perturbation or stimulation, such as a specific gene variation or environmental change.
One such untargeted metabolomics technique is LC-MS/MS untargeting. This technique detects dynamic changes in a large number of metabolites before and after perturbation or stimulation of an organism by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) methods. It allows identification of metabolites with differential expression and elucidation of the organism's metabolism-related processes.
Creative Proteomics' LC-MS/MS untargeted metabolomics provides high throughput, high resolution, and high sensitivity for the analysis of metabolites that are difficult to volatilize or have poor thermal stability. This technique uses ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography (UPLC) or ultra-high performance liquid chromatography, which offers higher separation capacity, faster separation speed, and better sensitivity by using smaller particle size packing materials in combination with higher pressure.
In tandem mass spectrometry MS scan mode, primary and secondary mass spectral information of metabolites can be simultaneously acquired. This combined with metabolomics data processing software allows for resolution of mass spectral information, enabling the detection and identification of hundreds to thousands of metabolites in a single analysis.
