Isobutyric acid is also known as 2-methylpropanoic acid. It is a carboxylic acid and its structural formula is (CH3)2-CH-COOH. Isobutyric acid can be found in the free state in Ceratonia siliqua, in the root of Arnica dulcis, invanilla and as an ethyl ester form in croton oil. Isobutyric acid is an isomer of butyric acid and they have same chemical formula C4H8O2 but a different structure. The chemical formula alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid is (CH3)2-C(OH)-COOH. The salts of isobutyric acid are more soluble in water than those of butyric acid.
