Coal is a readily combustible rock containing more than 50 percent by weight of carbonaceous material. It often occurs in stratified sedimentary deposits and forms from the accumulation and preservation of plant materials. Based on a set of physical parameters mostly controlled by moisture, volatile content and carbon content, coal falls into four categories: lignite, black coal, anthracite and graphite.
Various analytical methods are developed to measure the particular physical and chemical properties of coals. Proximate analysis is based on factors such as moisture presence, volatility, and carbon content. By contrast, ultimate analysis measures elements present in the coal samples. With those analysis results,each kind of coal is used in the most appropriate way, for coking, power generation or iron ore smelting.
