On Monday 5 October, Urban Lendahl, secretary of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine, announced the Nobel Prize winners in Physiology or Medicine. This prize was shared by William. C. Campbell and Satoshi Omura with one half, and the other half was awarded to Youyou Tu. This post will introduce three winners.
William C. Campbell
Born in Ramelton, Ireland in 1930, Campbell is the third son of a farm supplier. He majored in Zoology Trinity College, Dublin and graduated with first class honours. In 1957, he achieved his Ph.D degree in the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After that he was involved in the Therapeutic Reasearch in Merck Institute, which is the beginning for him to gain the Nobel Prize.
Satoshi Ōmura
As a Japanese biochemist, Omura is famous for the discovery and development of various pharmaceuticals originally occurring in microorganisms. After graduating from the University of Yamanshi, he received his M.S. degree in Tokyo University of Science and his Ph.D. degree in Phamrmaceutical Science from the University of Tokyo and the other Ph.D. in Chemistry at the Tokyo University of Science. Because of the discoveries about a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites, he shared the Nobel Prize in 2015.
Tu Youyou
Tu Youyou, a chinese medical scientist, pharmaceutical chemist, pharmacist and an educator, was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang, China in 1930. During 1951 to 1955, Tu studied at the Department of Pharmaceutical Science in Peking University Medical School/ Beijing Medical College and she graduated in 1955. After that, Tu worked for the Academic of Chinese Medicaine in Beijing. Tu is the first Chinese Nobel laureate in physiology or medicine and the first person in natural sciences.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine fields was shared by the three persons. And here we want to give them the deep congratulations and we also hope them can make the other milestone in this field.
